Vaccination against Covid-19 is working. “We have eight times less contamination when we are vaccinated and we have eleven times less risk of being admitted to critical care”, rejoiced the Director General of Health, Jérôme Salomon, Friday August 20 at Orly airport, where he came to greet the caregivers who were flying to the West Indies.

Where do these figures come from? From the latest study (PDF) of the Directorate of Research, Studies and Evaluation of Statistics (DREES), published the same day. The experts crossed the statistics concerning vaccination, hospitalizations and Covid-19 screenings between August 2 and August 8.

Nearly five times more deaths among the unvaccinated

First point: contamination. “Between August 2 and 8, the number of positive RT-PCRs per 100,000 unvaccinated people rose to nearly 400 compared to around 50 per 100,000 fully vaccinated people, a ratio of nearly eight”, underlines the text. “By restricting ourselves to symptomatic positives alone, positive tests per 100,000 inhabitants are significantly less numerous, almost 180 for the unvaccinated and around 20 for those completely.vaccinated ”, again for a ratio of one to eight. With a downside, however: fully vaccinated people are less tested than non-vaccinated, the vaccination certificate serving as a health pass or sufficient condition to travel in most countries.

Regarding hospitalizations, “Among people admitted to hospital during this period, 84% of critical care admissions and 76% of conventional hospital admissions are due to unvaccinated people, while fully vaccinated patients represent 9% and 17% respectively. ”, details the study. “By relating the numbers to the population of each vaccination status (…), there are 11 times more critical care admissions among the unvaccinated than among the fully vaccinated.”

Regarding deaths, these ratios are 75% for unvaccinated people and 20% for people completelyvaccinated ”, adds the study. Or, for a comparable population size, “4.7 times more deaths among the unvaccinated that week than among the fully vaccinated”.
